The reliefs are titled Hiatus no. 1, no.5, no. 6 and no. 9 and were acquired at Galerie Artline in The Hague in 2001 by the previous owner.

About Willem Kloppers

Willem Kloppers (The Hague 1937 – The Hague 2014) was a Dutch sculptor, painter, and multidisciplinary artist whose work is marked by restraint, material sensitivity, and a sustained engagement with surface and structure. Over the course of his career, Kloppers worked as a sculptor, installation artist, illustrator, matter painter, and monumental artist, developing a consistent artistic language across disciplines.

He was educated at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague between 1954 and 1959, a formative period that grounded him in classical training while exposing him to modernist ideas. Early recognition followed quickly: Kloppers was awarded the Royal Prize for Painting in both 1960 and 1961, confirming his position as a promising figure within the Dutch art scene. In 1962, he continued his studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, where contact with international artistic currents further informed his approach to form and material.

Although Kloppers traveled and worked in Switzerland, France, and Italy, he remained closely connected to The Hague, where he lived and worked for most of his life. This geographical stability is reflected in the coherence and continuity of his oeuvre. Rather than following shifting artistic trends, Kloppers pursued a personal and methodical path, focused on process, material presence, and the relationship between surface and depth.

Kloppers is best known for his relief works on panel, which form the core of his artistic production. These works occupy a space between painting and sculpture, emphasizing tactility and structure rather than illusion or narrative. Built up in layers, the reliefs explore rhythm, repetition, and subtle variations in surface. Materials were treated with restraint, allowing texture, shadow, and physical presence to define the work. This emphasis on materiality aligns Kloppers with matter painting, though his approach remains controlled and architectural rather than expressive or gestural.

In addition to reliefs, Kloppers produced monumental works and installations, often responding to architectural contexts. These projects extended his interest in spatial relationships and scale, while maintaining the same sober visual language found in his smaller works. His activity as an illustrator and painter further demonstrates the breadth of his practice, though drawing and painting were frequently integrated into his relief-based thinking rather than standing apart from it.

Throughout his career, Kloppers maintained an independent position within Dutch art. His work resists easy categorization and avoids overt symbolism, instead rewarding close attention and sustained viewing. The consistency of his approach, combined with a strong sense of material discipline, gives his work a quiet authority.

Following his death in 2014, Willem Kloppers has come to be regarded as a distinctive and serious figure in postwar Dutch art. His reliefs, in particular, stand as measured explorations of surface, form, and material, reflecting a lifelong commitment to clarity and restraint.
