A rare mould-blown, sandblasted and matt etched glass Art object ‘Hauenleuat’ or ‘Pike’s Jaws’, model 3540. Designed by Timo Sarpaneva in 1951 and produced by the Iittala glass factory in Finland circa 1955.

This object is part of the ‘Giant’ series of Art-objects. Sarpaneva was inspired for these object by the natural phenomenon known as ‘Hiiden Kirnu’ or ‘Giant’s Cauldron’. These are glacial pools carved out of solid rock by the descent of water into a glacial mill or by rotating pebbles in a subglacial meltwater stream.

The ‘Pike’s Jaws’ was produced in one size between 1952 and 1960 and are rare. This example is in good condition and is signed underneath the base: Timo Sarpaneva – Iittala.

 

About Timo Sarpaneva

Timo Sarpaneva (Helsinki, Finland 1926 – Helsinki, Finland 2006) was a pioneering artist in the world of glass and design. Throughout his illustrious career, Sarpaneva excelled in a wide range of designs, including glass art, ceramics, textiles and industrial design. His groundbreaking contributions and relentless pursuit of innovation have made him one of the most influential figures in Finnish design history.

Sarpaneva’s passion for art and design blossomed during his early years. He honed his skills at the renowned University of Art and Design in Helsinki, where he developed his unique artistic vision. Known for his bold experiments with shapes, textures and colours, Sarpaneva seamlessly blended traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Sarpaneva gained international recognition for his iconic glass designs, such as the legendary ‘Orkidea’ and ‘Kajak’. His bold and innovative approach revolutionised the use of glass as an expressive medium and made his works quintessential examples of modern Scandinavian design.

Sarpaneva’s contributions extended beyond glass art. He played a central role in the development of industrial design in Finland and worked closely with various companies to create exquisite objects, including cutlery, tableware, lighting and furniture. His collaboration with Iittala, one of Finland’s most renowned design brands, produced timeless classics that are still produced and cherished worldwide.
