About Cole Morgan
Cole Morgan (New York City 1950 – ) is a contemporary artist whose practice explores the intersection of material, perception, and quiet spatial experience. Working primarily across sculpture and installation, his oeuvre has developed gradually, marked by a consistent reduction of form and an increasing sensitivity to light, surface, and context.
Morgen’s early work emerged from an interest in constructed objects and the legacy of minimalism. These initial pieces often employed industrial materials—metal, glass, and stone—arranged in clear, geometric compositions. While formally restrained, they already suggested a concern with how objects occupy space and how viewers move around them. Over time, this approach shifted toward a more nuanced engagement with tactility and atmosphere. Edges softened, surfaces became more reflective or translucent, and the works began to register subtle changes in light and environment.
A defining aspect of Morgen’s development has been his focus on perception rather than objecthood alone. His later works frequently blur the boundary between sculpture and environment, inviting a slower mode of looking. Transparency, reflection, and layering play an important role, often creating works that appear to change depending on the viewer’s position or the time of day. In this sense, his practice aligns with a broader lineage of artists concerned with phenomenology, though it retains a distinctly understated and personal vocabulary.
Morgen has exhibited his work in a range of gallery and institutional contexts across Europe and North America. His exhibitions tend to emphasize spatial clarity, with installations carefully attuned to their architectural surroundings. Rather than imposing themselves on a space, his works often seem to settle into it, creating a quiet dialogue between object, light, and viewer. This approach has led to both solo presentations and participation in group exhibitions focused on contemporary sculpture and material-based practices.
His work is held in private collections as well as selected public and institutional collections, where it is valued for its contemplative quality and its careful balance between form and perception. While not overtly narrative, Morgen’s objects carry a sense of duration and attentiveness, rewarding sustained engagement rather than immediate impact.
