Artist

Oiva Toikka (1931 Viipurin maalaiskunta, Finland - 2019 Helsinki, Finland) was one of Scandinavia's foremost glass-artists. Educated in ceramics at the University of Art and Design Helsinki, Oiva Toikka took up glass design later in life and is probably best known for his large collection (more than 400 designs) of mouthblown glass birds, Toikka designed from 1972 until his death is 2019.

Among Toikka's many awards are the Lunning Prize in 1970, Finnish State Award for Crafts and Design in 1975, Pro Finlandia Medal in 1980, Kaj Franck Design Prize in 1992, Finland Prize in 2000 and Prins Eugen Medal in 2001.

Museums all over the world have included his work in their collections: MoMa, New York City, British Museum, Design Museum, Helsinki, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam etc.

Description

A mould blown, cased glass, cut off Art-object, model OT24. Designed by Oiva Toikka in 1965 and handmade by the craftsmen of the Nuutajärvi-Notsjö glassworks in Finland.

This model was made in three sizes and two colours for a only a short period, namely between 1965 and 1967. This example is the smallest size in clear lilac glass. (this model was also made in clear violet glass).

It's signed underneath the base: Nuutajärvi-Notsjö and apart from som very light scratches it is in good vintage condition, no chips or cracks.
